COLOMBO: The Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) yesterday disclaimed responsibility of 20 Sri Lankans stranded in Kuwait, claiming that even though they had gone for employment, they had failed to get registered with the Bureau as stipulated by Authorities.

The SLFEB said all Sri Lankans who leave the country for employment should get registered with the Bureau, which in turn would entitle them for a variety of benefits, including viable assistance in their hour of need.

Air Force bombs key terror training facility - Kilinochchi PDF Print E-mail

Sri Lanka Air Force fighter jets bombed a key LTTE training facility located at Kollanvillu , 4 Km South of Mulankavil in the Kilinochchi district this morning (May 14).

According to the Air Force sources, few air sorties were carried out between 7.15 - 7.30 am targeting the LTTE camp. The sources said that the target has been registered by the defence intelligence authorities after thorough ground surveillance. The target was effectively acquired, the sources added.

CHINA: China’s most devastating earthquake in three decades killed nearly 9,000 people on yesterday, with the toll likely to soar as authorities struggle to reach casualties in large areas cut off from relief. The earthquake that hit China’s southwestern province of Sichuan killed 8,533 people, the official Xinhua news agency said on Monday, citing the provincial government.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to address the Oxford Union today(13), on the invitation of the Oxford Union and the Sri Lanka Society of Oxford University.

The topic of his address will be 'Strategy towards empowering the rural economy in Sri Lanka'.

President Rajapaksa will be the first Sri Lankan Head of State and Sri Lankan statesman who has not previously held office in the Oxford Union to address it as a guest speaker. The last distinguished Sri Lankan to address the Union was former Foreign Minister, Lakshman Kadirgamar.

Twelve innocent civilians were killed while 31 reported injured according to latest reports in the bomb explosion triggered by LTTE terrorists inside the "New City Cafe" hotel in Ampara town on Friday evening, May 09.

The explosion took place around 5.45 p.m and the victims who received injuries were rushed to the Ampara hospital, sources said.

ImageThe Olympic flame reached the top of Mount Everest on Thursday (08), an emotional moment for China and the crowning of the Beijing Olympics torch relay that dogged by anti-Chinese protests, reports from Beijing said.

The climbers, all clad in red, lit the torch on the 8,848-meter (29,030-ft) peak at the end of a seven-hour climb with the Olympic flame protected in a lantern.

Anti-Chinese protesters caused serious disruption to some legs of the main torch relay on its journey around the world after the deadly March 14 riots in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa and subsequent unrest in other areas of Tibet

Sri Lanka army infantrymen battling against terrorists on the Mannar front in the Wanni theatre of operations, captured Adampan tank area this evening (May 8), defence sources said. According to the sources, Army liberated about 2 square kilometers area in the South of Adampan town, after hours long fighting since this morning. The newly liberated area lies between the Neelachcheana road and the dam of the Adampan tank, sources further said.
